Bestiary
The creatures that roam the roads and forests, with the numbers the 1997 game gives them. Nothing here is estimated: every stat is read from the game's own files, and the rules below come from its code.
Encounters
- Each time you step or rest there's a small chance of an encounter: 5 in 500 when the game begins.
- At nightfall the chance doubles, and at dawn it halves, so nights are more dangerous. It always stays between 2 and 30 in 500.
- One kind of monster appears, 1 to 10 of them, at the edge of your view in the direction you're heading. Each kind has a share of the 13 places in the encounter table.
- A monster left behind as the view scrolls away from it is gone for good.
Fighting
- The chance to land a blow is about 50% plus the attacker's Agility, less the defender's (at least 5%). A missile ignores the defender's Agility.
- A blow does 2, plus a tenth of the attacker's Might, less a tenth of the defender's Body, plus the weapon, less armour on the part it strikes. It always does at least 2.
- Monsters carry no weapons or armour. Fighting bare-handed adds a tenth of Might again instead of a weapon.
- High Dexterity aims at the weakest part. Anything dies when its head or torso reaches 0.
- Search the body of a monster you kill to take its gold.
